Apprentice Introductions - Part 1

We've just hit the half way point with our Winter 2016 Apprentices & I'm excited to introduce them to you this week & next! Gilyn, Kayla, & Frederique are hard at work brainstorming fun projects & I'm sure you'll see their names & faces around here again soon so we wanted you to have a chance to get to know them a bit!

Today, meet Gilyn Gibbs:

Purse & Clutch Apprentice

Where were you born & where do you call home?

I was born in Nashville, Tennessee, but I’ve grown up my entire life in Texas.

Who are some of your fashion icons?

As far as fashion icons go, the first two that come to mind are Marilyn Monroe and Frida Kahlo. Marilyn Monroe is elegant and feminine while Frida is known more for her uniqueness and strength. These women represent both sides of the spectrum as far as fashion goes and I look to both of them for inspiration.

Why are you interested in Fair Trade Fashion?

I come from a family of artisans and have always appreciated what it takes to make handmade products. When I started learning about social entrepreneurship I realized how supporting artisans around the world could make a real difference in our global society.

Socially Conscious Business Apprenticeship

What countries have you visited? Which was your favorite & why?

I went to China when I was 16 with the People to People Student Ambassador Program and realized how passionate I am about travelling and learning about other cultures. I studied abroad in Mexico after my freshman year in college, went to Ecuador after my junior year for a 6-week volunteer program, and went to Ecuador again the next summer for a study abroad program.

Although, Mexico has a special place in my heart because of the close cultural connections it shares with Texas, my trips to Ecuador were the most eye-opening and valuable experiences I have had so far.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at P&C so far?

I have had a great time at P&C so far! I have really enjoyed learning about the business-side of this venture. I didn’t know quite how much detail went in to crunching the numbers! I have also really enjoyed learning about marketing and how to draw the consumer in to create potential customers. Having worked in retail I thought I knew a lot about sales, but now I know that when you are working from an online platform, it is an entirely different ballgame.
